It was built as part of the festivities for the Centenary celebrations of Mexican Independence, within a program of works aiming to make the city more beautiful, commissioned by the then president, Porfirio Díaz. Formerly known as Museo de Artes Plásticas, the Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes (Museum of the Palace of Fine Arts), was the first site in Mexico to receive artistic works for contemplation –in other words, it was the first museum in the country.

There are currently 17 mural pieces by seven Mexican artists, as well as a vast program of activities in the museum and the theater.
